A History Worth Knowing.

“Tamarisk has the most beautiful greens in the country.” – Ben Hogan

Ben Hogan, one of golf’s greatest players, helped shape the Club traditions as Tamarisk’s first Golf Professional. Hogan’s successor, Ellsworth Vines, was the second golf pro at Tamarisk and the only athlete in history who had been among the top ten golfers and top ten tennis players in the world. Vines not only won a PGA Tour Event, he won Wimbledon as well.

By 1969, golfers everywhere talked about the superior course and its magnificent greens. Tamarisk was selected as one of the four area clubs to play host to the inaugural Palm Springs Desert Classic, which would go on to become known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic.

In the 1990’s, the Club expanded its golf programs to provide frequent charity and couples tournaments. Today, the legendary golf course has evolved with the times and now we proudly enjoy our newly renovated clubhouse.

Hole 1

Par 5 | Handicap 17

The golf course eases you into your round with this relatively short par-5 starting hole. Fairway bunkers off the tee and cross bunkers short of the green must be avoided to give yourself a good chance at birdie. Large, deep bunkers guard this green that slopes severely from back to front.

Medium-length par-3. With water guarding the left side of the hole and a bunker on the right, a well-placed approach is critical here. This tricky, sloping green makes birdies a rarity here.

Hole 4

Par 5 | Handicap 11

This risk/reward par-5 can make or break your front nine. The second shot must be laid up either short or to the right of the pond that guards the front left of the green. Staying away from the water on the approach may leave you in a deep greenside bunker on the right. Long hitters may have a go at this green in two, but any offline approach will find water or sand.

Par 4 | Handicap 7

One of the few dogleg holes on the course, this par-4 requires a well-placed tee shot, avoiding the fairways bunkers, which will leave you with a lengthy approach. This green is well-bunkered and slopes severely from back to front. Check the hole location before hitting your approach, as you do not want to miss on the short side of the hole here.

Hole 7

Par 4 | Handicap 13

This short hole is another great risk/reward design. You may choose to lay up short of the lake on the left side off the tee and leave yourself a relatively short approach. Or, you may choose to bomb your drive down the right side, flirting with the fairway bunkers, but leaving yourself a very short approach to the green. This green has several different levels, making long putts very difficult. Avoid the deep greenside bunker short-right at all costs.

Hole 8

Par 4 | Handicap 5

This average-length par-4 offers many options. A pond cuts into the fairway from the left and must be avoided. Longer hitters must avoid the fairway bunkers off the tee, while leaving their tee shot short of the water. Shorter hitters may have to lay up short of the pond with their second shot, leaving an intimidating approach over the water. The green is large and is guarded on both sides by bunkers.

Par 4 | Handicap 3

This long, demanding par-4 is one of the best holes on the golf course. Fairway bunkers on both sides frame the tee shot, and the green is surrounded on both sides by deep, challenging bunkers. The green itself is very large and has three distinct levels. Make sure your approach shot finds the proper level or putting will be extremely difficult.

Hole 10

Par 4 | Handicap 4

This par-4 is defined by out of bounds on the left that runs the entire length of the hole. Players trying to avoid the fairway bunker on the left off the tee may find themselves under the trees on the right. A bunker in front of the green forces the player to play a soft, lofted shot into this green. The green slopes severely from back to front, so keeping your approach underneath the hole is crucial.

Hole 11

Par 3 | Handicap 18

A beautiful par-3 hole that features a large pond in front of the green. The narrow green does not offer much of a target and is made more intimidating by deep bunkers on both sides of the green. The approach must be on target and distance control is critical, as this green has two distinct levels that make putting difficult.

Hole 12

Par 5 | Handicap 8

Fairway bunkers on both sides of the fairway are in play off the tee, making a straight tee shot very important. The second shot must be placed in the fairway, in order to give yourself a chance to hit the green with your approach. Stay clear of the fairway bunker on the left approximately 50 yards from the green. Greenside bunkers on both sides are deep and penalizing, so accuracy with your approach shot will benefit you greatly here.

Hole 15

Par 4 | Handicap 10

This par-4 is the narrowest on the golf course and is framed by out of bounds running down both sides of the hole. Fairway bunkers on both sides will catch many stray tee shots, making it very difficult to reach the green. The green complex features an extremely deep, penalizing bunker on the right. All approach shots will roll towards this bunker, so an approach shot placed to the left side of the green is ideal. This is the smallest green on the golf course, offering players a chance to hole putts from any location on the green.

Par 4 | Handicap 6

This long par-4 places a premium on a well-placed drive down the right side, avoiding the large fairway bunker on the left. This green slopes dramatically from back to front, making it important to keep your approach underneath the hole.

Hole 18

Par 5 | Handicap 16

This par-5 is the signature hole at Tamarisk. A straight tee shot will steer clear of the fairway bunkers on both sides. Long hitters may have a go at this green in two, but it will require a precision shot, since the green is guarded by a large pond on the right and bunkers on the left. Shorter hitters will lay up in the fairway and must avoid fairway bunkers on the left and trees on the right. This will leave an intimidating approach with water looming on the right. This large green is relatively flat and putting shouldn’t be a problem.
